The Aseptic Non-Touch Technique

As part of your self-administration we recommend that you use the Aseptic Non-Touch Technique (ANTT) in your home to reduce the risk of infection. The ANTT is a simple step-by-step process to reduce the risk of contaminating your equipment. ANTT is based on simple precautions like hand washing and avoiding contact with certain pieces of your equipment.

Make sure you are familiar with the ANTT hand washing guidance.

ANTT Key points

ANTT key points

  • Create a safe and sterile working area called a ‘General Aseptic Field’ by taking infective precautions and using clean equipment
  • Avoid touching the ‘Key-Parts’ of your equipment as these pose a high risk of infection if contaminated

The Key-Parts of your equipment are:

1

The end of the pre-filled syringe

The end of the vascular access device

The end of the vascular access device

The end of the infusion pump

The end of the infusion pump

By creating a General Aseptic Field and using the ANTT, you can help to protect the Key-Parts of your equipment, ensuring your infusion is as risk-free as possible.

If you are unsure what the Key-Parts are or you are worried whether you’re using the ANTT correctly, ask your OPAT team for guidance.
